چکیده

The red quasar 3C212 (z = 1.049) is one of the most distant and most luminous AGN which has shown evidence of an X-ray warm absorber. In order to further investigate this unusual quasar, we used Chandra/ACIS-S to observe 3C212 for 19.5 ksec, resulting in a net detection of ∼ 4000 counts. The Chandra data confirm the presence of an excess absorbing column NH ≈ 4 × 10 21 cm at the quasar redshift, but we find no compelling evidence for a warm absorber. Using both the Chandra and archival ROSAT PSPC data, we obtain very good fits for both a partially covered neutral absorber and a low-ionization (U = 0.03) photo-ionized absorber. In the ultraviolet, 3C212 shows a strong associated Mg ii absorber. Based on a moderate resolution (80 km s) MMT spectrum we show that the absorber is highly saturated and has a covering fraction less than 60%, implying that the absorber is truly intrinsic to the quasar. Photo-ionization modeling of the Mg ii absorber yields a constraint on the ionization parameter of U < 0.03, inconsistent with a warm UV/X-ray absorber. In addition to our spectral analysis, we find evidence in the ACIS image data for weak extended emission surrounding the quasar as well as emission corresponding to the radio lobes at a distance of 5 from 3C212. The statistical significance of these features is low, but we briefly explore the implications if the detections are valid. Subject headings: quasars: absorption lines — quasars:individual (3C212) — ultraviolet: galaxies — X-rays: galaxies

A longer XMM - Newton look at I Zwicky 1 : physical conditions and variability of the ionised absorbers

We present a spectral analysis of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy I Zwicky 1, focusing on the characteristics of the ionised absorbers as observed with XMM-Newton in 2005. The soft X-ray spectrum shows absorption by two components of ionised gas with a similar column density (N H ∼ 10 21 cm −2) and ionisation parameters log ξ ∼ 0 and 2.5. Comparing this observation with a 2002 XMM-Newton data ...

New Chandra/ HST-STIS results on Seyfert I AGN: Photoionized Outflows

We present soft X-ray results from observations with Chandra (HETGS) of the Seyfert I AGN NGC 4593 and Mrk 509. We discuss the photoionized outflows associated with Seyfert I AGN in terms of their absorption spectral signatures and discuss their kinematics, column density and ionization state. We discuss the link between UV and X-ray absorbers in Mrk 509 (which was simultaneously observed with ...

We present the results from our 140 ks XMM-Newton and 500 ks Chandra observation of NGC 5548. The velocity structure of the X-ray absorber is consistent with the velocity structure measured in the simultaneous UV spectra. In the X-rays we can separate the highest outflow velocity component, −1040 km s −1 , from the other velocity components. This velocity component spans at least three orders o...

Thermal and Non - thermal Plasmas in the Galaxy Cluster 3 C 129

We describe new Chandra spectroscopy data of the cluster which harbors the prototypical “head tail” radio galaxy 3C 129 and the weaker radio galaxy 3C 129.1. We combined the Chandra data with Very Large Array (VLA) radio data taken at 0.33, 5, and 8 GHz (archival data) and 1.4 GHz (new data). We also obtained new HI observations at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory (DRAO) to measure ...

Separating the X-ray Emissions of Uv Ceti a and B with Chandra

We present the first spatially separated X-ray observation of the active UV Ceti binary with Chandra, providing important new information on the relative X-ray activity levels of its nearly identical dM5.5e components. The two components had similar X-ray luminosities during low-level periods and emission measure loci derived from Low Energy Transmission Grating spectra reveal similar coronal t...
